THE RED BRIDGE

The Red Bridge crosses the Elizabeth River at Campbell Town. Built in 1838 using penal labour, it is the oldest surviving brick arch bridge in Australia, as well as the oldest bridge anywhere on the National Highway.

GREAT LAKE

Great Lake is located 1,034 metres above sea level on Tasmania’s Central Plateau. The Miena multiple arch dam was built across the outlet in 1922 and it is used to generate hydroelectricity. The lake’s water travels down a tunnel beneath the Great Western Tiers and into Poatina, Tasmania’s second largest power facility.

Great Lake quickly established itself as a premier trout fishery after being stocked in 1870, producing trophy fish. Browns are generated naturally, whereas rainbows are stocked.

ARCHER’S FOLLY

CARRICK, TAS, AUSTRALIA

Archer’s Folly was built in 1847 by John Archer shortly after his marriage to Eliza Palmer. The “City of Launceston” which was carrying supplies for the Folly, sank near Adelaide and he was forced to abandon construction.

It was purchased in 1867 by Thomas W Monds and used as a grain store. In 1977 it was purchased by the Marik Family, partly restored and used as a gallery for their metal art work. The buiding was destroyed by fire in 1978 but is listed on the National Heritage Council register.

MERSEY BLUFF LIGHTHOUSE

The Mersey Bluff Lighthouse standing to the western side of the mouth of the Mersey River near Devonport is unusual in Australia with its distinctive vertical red striped day mark.

The Lighthouse was constructed in 1889 and is of brick construction on a stone base.

The light was demanned in 1920 and converted to DC electric operation with an acetylene burner as a back up lightsource.  Mains power was connected in 1978. The lighthouse retains it’s original Chance Bros fourth order lantern.

LOW HEAD LIGHTHOUSE

LOW HEAD, TAS, AUSTRALIA

The lighthouse located at the mouth of the Tamar Estuary, was built in 1833. It was constructed of local rubble with a coat of stucco to make the structure durable and to provide a worthwhile landmark. The crown was built of freestone from Launceston.

The Low Head Foghorn is sounded each Sunday at noon. It was installed in 1929 and decommissioned in 1973 and restored in 2000. It is the only operational G-type diaphone in the world. Under ideal conditions, the Foghorn can be heard approximately 30 kilometres out to sea.
